Demonstrative Adjectives

Here are some words that we will use to present things depending on how far they are from us.

If these demonstratives accompany a noun, they will be adjectives; whereas if they are alone and they have an accent mark, they will have replaced that noun and they will be pronouns.

DO and IO pronouns

What is a pronoun? Pronouns replace nouns.

The object that directly receives the action of the verb is called the direct object (DO).
You can have the DO if you ask the verb "what?" or "whom?".

Bill hit the ball.
Bill hit what?
Bill hit the ball.

Sherry hit Bill.
Sherry hit whom?
Sherry hit Bill.

The indirect object (IO) tells us where the direct object (DO) is going.
The indirect object answers the question "To whom?" or "For whom?" the action of the verb is performed.

He gives María the book.
To whom does he give the book?
To María.

IO=María

He buys me flowers.
For whom does he buy the flowers?
For me.

IO=me

Tener used in expressions (I am 17, I am hungry...)

Tener means to have or to possess. It is an irregular -ER verb, although it takes the -ER endings for the present tense, it has a changing stem.

The only regular forms are the nosotros and vosotros forms. Check the changes that occur in the rest of the forms:

Yes, you are right! It is a "gogo verb" and it also adds an "i" in the , él-ella-usted and ellos-ellas-ustedes form. You got it :)

The verb tener can also be translated as to be in some expressions.
You already know how to express age in Spanish:
- I am seventeen Yo tengo diecisiete años.

Likes and Dislikes

To say we like something in Spanish, we use the verb GUSTAR.

The structure of the sentence is different than in English, it is backwards, we could translate it literally as “something is pleasant to me”. Ejemplo: Me gusta el tenis (Tenis is pleasant to me), Me gustan los gatos (Cats are pleasant to me).

For the negative sentence, just write “no” at the beginning of the sentence. Ejemplo: No me gustan las zanahorias (I don’t like carrots).

Use GUSTA when:

•the thing you like is an action: Me gusta montar a caballo (I like riding horses)
•the thing you like is singular: Me gusta mucho el café (I like coffee very much)

Use GUSTAN when:

•the thing you like is plural: Me gustan los gatos.
